Update on 5W Elm St Renovation project

Dear community members,

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatu Allahi wa Barakatuh, we wanted to give you a quick update on the progress we’ve been able to make so far with the renovation project and the next steps Insha Allah.  Alhamdulilah, we are working through the violations identified by the Norristown borough.  In parallel to that, we are also working on the renovation plan.  Addressing the violations will enable us to use the new place while developing a renovation plan will help us ensure that we convert the place into the Masjid we all want.  Please see below summarized updates on both the violations and renovation work.

Violations

The emergency lights and roof repair have been completed.  Broken and cracked glass have been replaced.  Also, fire department compliance steps have been identified.

Renovation

The NIS management team has met and assembled the feedback from the community as well as brainstormed the priorities for the renovation project.  All the requirements were documented and classified into short, medium, and long term.  Short term was identified as end of 2019, medium term as by next Ramadan, and long term as 3 years.  We are in talks with the architects who are working on developing options for us to look at that are suitable with the requirements.

We are all eager to start using our new Masjid as soon as possible but we firmly believe that giving this project the time and the planning it deserves will serve us well, even if it means we have to wait a little longer.  We will not cut corners, nor will we compromise quality.

Allah (SWT) has helped us in ways we could not imagine, we ask Allah (SWT) to guide us all to the best decisions.

 Update on New Building purchase:

Alhamdulilah, with the grace of Allah (SWT) we were able to complete the purchase of 5 W. Elm St., Norristown  Effective 7/3/2019, the building is property of Norristown Islamic Society. The Norristown township is requiring us to address some findings prior to moving in.  We have formed a planning committee which will prioritize these requirements along with coming up with a phased plan for renovation. It will take us some time to address the findings and complete phase I of the renovations.  The most important factor for us is not how quickly we can move in but rather making sure that we convert the building into a place that will serve our goals Insha Allah.

We will schedule an open house in the near future Insha Allah to give everyone the opportunity to see the building and share ideas on how to convert and utilize the space.

We will give updates on the progress from time to time Insha Allah.
